Scallywaggs Gymnastics

The Scallywaggs All Starz Display Team

Our team was formed in 2001 with the express desire to attend the World Gymnaestrada in Portugal during 2003. After a great experience we decided to carry on and put together a new team to perform in Austria during 2007.

World Gymnaestrada 2007 – Austria

Our new team included 7 members that travelled to Portugal and two new families. The team philosophy is that everyone on the team performs so the age range for this team was from 8 years to 70 years (this included 3 generations from one family). We had a total of 18 in our team.

Our display was based around gymnastics with buckets and using a pirate theme.

We had lots of fun coming up with innovative ways to incorporate the buckets and the kids tried all sorts of wild ideas. In keeping with our fun philosophy there is an element of comedy involved and a few surprises for everyone. Our display was very well received in Austria with our 2nd performance playing to a full house (a first for an Australian team at a Gymnaestrada).

World Gymnaestrada 2011 – Switzerland

In 2011 the team travelled to Switzerland to attend the 14th World Gymnaestrada with a smaller team of 13 but still having 3 generations of one family involved. This team performed a new display based on Morning, Noon and Night with some great props and tumbling. Once again the display was well received by the crowds due to it’s innovative ideas and the wide range of ages on the floor.

World Gymnaestrada 2015 – Finland

Scallywaggs sent another team to this Gymnaestrada to participate making it one of the only clubs in Australia to attend 4 consecutive World Gymnaestradas

World Gymnaestrada 2019 - Austria

Once again the team from Scallywaggs travelled to Dornbirn, Austria for this fantastics event. Head coach and owner of Scallywaggs, Kit Poole, was given the honour of carrying the Australian flag in the opening ceremony leading the 240 athletes from Australia into the stadium in front of 20,000 spectators. The team performed 3 times during the event and were given standing ovations each time, this is considered to be recognition of an outstanding display and something usually reserved only for the highest quality teams

About Gymnaestrada

The Gymnaestrada is held every 4 years along the same lines as the Olympics, and while not having the same prestige, it makes up for this by participation numbers and atmosphere.

The event is officially sanctioned by the FIG (International Gymnastics Federation) The winter Olympics in Vancouver had 5500 athletes and officials in attendance, by comparison, the Gymnaestrada in Austria attracted close to 25,000 participants alone. In Europe, where it is normally held, this event is the largest gymnastics event (if not sporting in general) in the world. There are no winners or losers, only people who love gymnastics and performing.

If you require any additional information regarding the team or the Gymnaestrada please do not hesitate to contact Scallywaggs Gymnastics on 4329 4100.
